The street rat is back — and this time in the flesh.
Disney has announced that it is planning to release a live-action adaptation next May of its animated classic Aladdin, the ancient tale of the penniless market boy who, with a little help from a certain genie in a lamp, marries the headstrong Princess Jasmine.
The remake, shot in London and on location in Jordan, is directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Will Smith as the Genie, Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine, Disney said.
One early fan is Will Smith himself, who took to Instagram to share his enthusiasm for his latest role: “LEMME OUT!! Can’t wait for y’all to see Me BLUE! :-)”, he had written in his post.
Disney, which released a teaser trailer on YouTube to spread the word of its new production, said the film score includes new songs as well as re-recordings of the original songs written by Alan Menken and lyricists Howard Ashman and Tim Rice.
Pakistan International Film Festival Features Animation
The second edition of Pakistan International Film Festival (PIFF) held under Karachi Film Society, focused on animated films only. The three-day event in Karachi had multiple activities including seminars, talks, workshops and film screenings along with three Pakistan premiers of international productions. The festival is supported by the Government of Sindh through its Department of Culture.
The seminar was conducted on the topic, ‘Potential of Animation in Pakistan – Challenges & Opportunities’, while six films were; BILAL: A New Breed of Hero (Arif Jilani – producer), ALLAHYAR and the Legend of Markhor (Uzair Zaheer Khan – director, writer & producer), Mary & The Witch’s Flower (English Language), Modest Heroes (Ponoc Short Films Theatre, Volume 1), The Donkey King (Aziz Jindani – co-producer, co-writer and creative director) and 3 BAHADUR: Rise of the Warriors (Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy – director, SOC Films), and few short films; Global Citizens, Saif The Fisherman, Earth Heroes, and Quaid Se Batein (Daniyal Noorani – Creator) were screened at various cinema houses of the city. A Workshop was also conducted by Geoffery Wexler.
A special screenings of the animated movies, organized for the underprivileged students from various parts of the city was also held on first day if festival. Participating schools included JS Academy for the Deaf, Tadrees, Karachi Schools’ Guide and the Young Patriots School.
Seminar was moderated by Filmmaker Sana Tauseef who produced animated film ‘TikTok’ in 2018, while the panellists were Amyn Farooqui (Co-CEO/Co-Founder & Creative SHARP IMAGE), Daniyal Noorani (CEO – Wakhra Studio /Creator Quaid se Batein), Aziz Jindani (Founder – Talisman Animation Studio, Creative Director ‘The Donkey King), Arif Jilani (Producer Barajoun Entertainment, BILAL – A New Breed of hero), Imran Ali Dina (Lecturer/ GFX Mentor) and Asif Iqbal (Bridge Animations &VFX -Chief Executive Officer) who discussed at length the quality and content of animated films produced in Pakistan and the reasons behind losing good human resource to foreign countries. Chief Guest of the seminar was Mr Murtaza Wahab – Advisor to Chief Minister of Sindh on Law, Anti-corruption, Establishment and Information.
The workshop was conducted by Mr Geoffrey Wexler, Chief of the International Division at Studio Ponoc on “Communicating Culture with Integrity”. The workshop comprised discussion from his work on Studio Ponoc’s debut feature film ‘Mary and The Witch’s Flower’ to his pursuit of storytelling worthy when producing the English-language version of Isao Takahata’s masterpiece, the Studio Ghilbi’s ‘Only Yesterday’.
The concluding day of PiFF 2019 Animation started with the annual brunch which was attended by Principal Secretary Govt of Sindh Mr S. T. Mustafa, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Sindh Mr Sajid Jamal Abro, Commissioner Karachi Mr Iftikhar Ali Shallwani, filmmakers, members of the U.S Consulate, artists and founding members of the Karachi Film Society.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ishrat Hussain, founding member of KFS stressed on the need of organizing such events to nourish and train the young filmmakers of Pakistan and to put the country’s film industry on the world’s entertainment map.
Sultana Siddiqui, president Karachi Film Society once again stressed on the need of the government’s support to ensure the growth of Pakistan’s film industry. She also urged the attendees to support each other and to take steps towards the collective growth of the society.
The second edition of the Pakistan International Film Festival 2019 concluded with a special sneak peek of ‘The Glassworker’, presented by Pakistan’s first hand-drawn animation studio ‘Mano Animation Studios’. Usman Riaz, the founder of Mano Animation Studios shared his journey and the efforts that went behind making Pakistan’s first hand-drawn anime movie.
The Festival saw a gathering of professionals, students, academia and enthusiasts of animation in Pakistan.

SOLIS MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL COMES TO KARACHI
SOLIS MUSIC & ARTS will be bringing world-famous musicians to Karachi on 16th November 2019 for the biggest international music event in Pakistan ever!
Presented by Mountain Dew, this will be SOLIS 2019, PART 3 in Pakistan! The festival echoed through the mountains in Islamabad in February, and shook the ground in Lahore. International artist line-up will be comprised of Clean Bandit, Kill The Buzz, Oceanvs Orientalis, FDVM, Turhan James, Maleo, Hussain Dosa, and Neha Khan.
Clean Bandit is a British electronic music band, formed in Cambridge in 2008.The band release “Mozart’s House” reached number 17 on the UK Singles Chart. In January 2014, their single ‘Rather Be’ reached number ten on the US Billboard Hot 100. In 2015, the song won the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. Clean bandit got over a billion views on YouTube and are one of the 30 most viewed videos on YouTube.
Kill The Buzz presents a big-room cutting-edge sound, drop to make club dance-floors shake on their grounds. They entered in Electronic Dance Music (EDM) Scene with “Party Hard” released by Revealed Recordings in October 2012.
Oceanvs Orientalis is a formation which aims to challenge the aesthetic perception in electronic music. It blends itself with the archaeological tunes of mankind’s cumulative musical history and in this very context believes that “everything comes from the east.
FDVM, Florent and Victorien are best known for their contagious good vibe and uplifting house music. Gathering countless followers around the globe and more than 100+ million plays on their original music, the French Duo performs most of their shows apart with Florent in Europe and Victorien in the US.
Turhan James makes a variety of EDM genres, from deep house to dance-pop. Moving to Ottawa, Canada and performing in local and international festivals like Salt Arts and SOLIS Lahore & Islamabad, James has also released his new song, titled ‘Feel Alive’ earlier this year. Some of his previous titles include ‘LA,’ ‘Wicked Ways’ and ‘Amsterdam.’

Pakistan’s Gaming Prodigy Arslan ‘Ash’ Siddique takes his Rightful Place among the Tekken Elite
Arslan ‘Ash’ Siddique hosted a grand event at Nishat Hotel Emporium in Lahore. The purpose of the event was to address the e-sports community and the broader gaming audience in Pakistan.
The event was graced with the presence of Ash’s friends and family, e-sports community members, socialites, bloggers and the media. As the guests walked in, they were transported to an area adorned with Ash’s posters and trophies noting his outstanding achievements.
A montage of Ash’s ultimate journey to being the undisputed crown-winner of the Tekken world was played at the event. After a reveal video, the 24-year-old undisputed champion from Lahore graced the stage. The moderator for the segment Mamoon Sabri asked him questions about his rise as one of world’s greatest Tekken players today and his long journey. Ash also spoke about his sensational victories in international Tekken tournaments and his history. He announced that he is the first Pakistani athlete to be signed by Red Bull.
“If you’re a gamer, it is your dream to be a Red Bull athlete,” said Ash. “Red Bull has a huge presence in the international gaming industry and it feels like finally joining my family. Red Bull athletes are a class apart and some of the greatest players in the world. So, it really feels amazing to be a part of this elite group. And it’s an honor for me to represent Pakistan through this in the world.”
The Tekken maestro also spoke of the potential impact of him being a Red Bull athlete on the local gaming community. He has singlehandedly put Pakistan’s gaming community on the world map; therefore, he feels it has a huge scope for growth and more local players to aspire higher and make it.
From playing in the local arcades in Lahore to winning EVO Japan 2019 and EVO USA 2019 consecutively, Ash is currently on the top of the world. In the process, he has defeated the world’s finest Tekken players, including Tekken legend Knee, Chanel, Book and LowHigh (Evo 2018 Champ).
His rise as an elite player has led him to be signed by Red Bull in order to join the likewise elite gamers in the world. After making history in 2019, Ash is still not done.
Ash said, “I always move forward with a dream to achieve. 10 years ago, my dream was to collect one hundred thousand (Pakistani) rupees. My next dream was to become the number one player in Pakistan. Then it was to become number one player in the whole world and to win two consecutive EVOs for Pakistan. I have fulfilled that.”
Now, Ash focuses on his next goal: winning the prestigious Tekken World Tour 2019 Finals in December in Bangkok, Thailand, where he is among the top 20 players invited to compete.
At the event, Ash also offered everyone a sneak peak of watching him in action with an opportunity to play Tekken with him. Two of his fans as well as Red Bull country manager Taimoor Afaq played the game with him.
Post-game, Afaq gave the concluding remarks, welcoming Ash to the Elite Red Bull family. But he wasn’t the only one to do so. To Ash’s surprise, four Red Bull esports legends, including the FIFA eWorld Cup player Abdulaziz Alshehri aka Mr. D0ne, also sent in their video messages, congratulating and welcoming Arslan to the family.
Finally, Ash made his last remarks to send the crowd home with a high-adrenaline experience and newfound inspiration in the young Tekkenace.
